What are fillers and how do they work?
As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in the skin lessens, as cells lose their ability to produce more of their youthful component. The skin becomes dryer, thinner and less able to fix itself. When we’re born, we have plentiful amounts of hyaluronic acid (HA) in our body, but as we get older this store of HA diminishes, leaving the skin less well supported, and so lines and wrinkles develop. By lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume, dermal fillers can make a difference to a person’s appearance, giving them a fresher look.
The treatment of wrinkles with dermal fillers will usually involve injecting this naturally occurring product (HA) through a tiny needle. The discomfort is minimal as the treatment does not take long to perform. The aesthetic outcomes of treatments with dermal filler are seen immediately after the treatment. Treating wrinkles with dermal filler is fast, leaving no scars.
What is Dermal Filler?
Dermal Filler is a sterile solution of Hyaluronic Acid Gel which is injected into the affected area. Dermal Filler is used to correct volume loss and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
What is Botulinum Toxin A (“Botox®”)?
Botulinum Toxin A is a neurotoxin made by the bacteria Clostridum Botulinum. Injected directly into targeted muscles, it causes temporary muscle paralysis. This prevents muscular contraction and creates the desired cosmetic effects.
Are there other conditions that can be effectively treated using Botulinum Toxin A (Botox®)?
Botulinum Toxin A
is also used to treat the condition known as hyperhidrosis, (a.k.a. excessive sweating); and teeth grinding.
How long does the procedure take?
Treatments typically last 30 to 60 minutes.
NOTE: This is a guideline only and duration of your specific treatment may vary.
Is the treatment painful?
Most patients find the injections only cause mild, temporary discomfort.
Usually the area is anaesthetised with local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort.
What will I look like after the treatment?
Immediately after the injection there may be mild swelling
which usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. Application of ice for a few hours after treatment will help reduce any swelling or mild bruising.
After that, of course, you will look fabulous...!
How long will my treatment last?
You can expect your treatment to last somewhere
between 6 and 9 months for dermal fillers
and 3 to 4 months for Botox®.
Treatment longevity depends very much on your lifestyle; smoking, alcohol and/or sunbeds will shorten the time substantially.
Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects of this treatment are rare.
Some side effects could be:
Transient numbness
may develop in the treated area.
Mild bruising
may occur.
Temporary swelling
at the injection site.
NOTE: It is important to remember, any injection carries a small risk of infection. We take every precaution to ensure any risk of side effects are minimised and will advise on the best aftercare to reduce the possibility of infection.
What is the best post-treatment advice?
Avoid high intensity exercise
immediately following treatment for 24 hours.
Avoid touching/rubbing
treated areas.
Maintain an upright position for 3 hours afterwards.
(NOTE: This is particularly important for Botulinum Toxin A (“Botox®”) injections)
Avoid heavy alcohol consumption
on the day of treatment.
Avoid hot environments
on the day of treatment including saunas, steam rooms or hot baths.
Who would this treatment suit?
Facial fillers can be used on a wide range of patients, and are primarily used for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of lines and wrinkles. Other suitable candidates are those seeking to add structure and volume to the face.
We see a lot of patients who have lost volume in their face due to living a very active, high impact lifestyle (such as runners). Fillers help to restore the volume loss that naturally begins to occur as we age, and in turn gives a fresher, brighter appearance.
Who can have treatment?
You need to be over 18 years old to receive treatment.
We observe industry guidelines and patients who look like they might be under the age of 18 will be asked to present photo ID during the initial consultation. It is good practice to bring it with you to avoid disappointment.
Is it necessary to leave a deposit when I make my booking?
Yes.
There is a £30 recoupable, non-refundable deposit
which will be incorporated into your treatment. If, during the consultation it is determined that treatment is not suitable the deposit is non-refundable.
